My friend is pulling a prank on me, I'm in class but through a window I saw him change my bike gear from 5th to 2nd or 1st.

I won't be able to reach my bike until later in the afternoon, about 2:45 pm, is leaving my bike jumped from 1st to 2nd gear for a few hours going to damage it badly?

No, just shift it back when you get to it later, lame prank, bikes don't shift till the cranks are turning.

No just shift it back to wear it was before. The worst it could do is mess up the cable but cable is very cheap. Bo major damage could occur.

really not that funny of a prank???

It will put strain on the cable, but won't cause any significant damage. Just put back in the right gear when you can.

Since all cables stretch slightly over time you periodically have to adjust the derailleur slightly to ensure crisp shifts. The (not very funny) prank MAY cause slight stretching making adjustment necessary a little earlier, but I highly doubt it will be noticeable.

It will put stress on the cable and could damage the shifter. How do know what gear he put the shifter in ?

    Not at all.

if the bike was not moving then yes it can do serious damage. you need to re-aline the cable back in place for it to be the same if you don't then you might not be able to use cirtain gears. take it from me my friend.
